Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels-Los Angeles, California
Designer & Sculptor: Robert Graham
Client: Archdiocese of Los Angeles
R&SE scope of work included engineering, design, fabrication, transportation and installation of the Great Bronze Doors.
The Great Bronze Doors of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels consists of two sets of interconnected doors, an inner set (20’x30’) and an outer set (30’x30”). Each set is constructed of stainless steel covered in a bronze skin beautifully adorned with the artistic expression of Robert Graham.
Despite weighing over 25 tons they open with ease, rotating on steel posts with a sophisticated hidden hydraulic system. The powerful and silent 3-hp electric motor can open either the solid inner doors or the hollow outer doors. The doors have a design life of 300 years.
